Sometimes I see patients in San Diego who consult a cosmetic dentist not because of problems with their teeth, but because of problems with their gums. No matter how straight or white your teeth are, having a gummy smile can still undermine your confidence. Fortunately, an innovative treatment called laser gum sculpting can correct your gum concerns. I frequently use this advanced procedure at my practice to restore a more natural, healthy looking smile.
How It Works
Laser gum sculpting uses precise thermal energy to gently vaporize excess gum tissue. This allows a greater amount of the tooth to be revealed and creates a more normal gum-to-tooth ratio. I can usually perform this treatment in just a few minutes, and the results are instantaneous.
What to Expect
Typically, I first numb my patient’s gums using a local anesthetic for optimal comfort during the procedure. I then gently sculpt the gums with the laser to eliminate excess tissue. Once the procedure is complete, my patients can return home.
Recovery & Results
You may notice that your gums are swollen or sore for about 1 week after the procedure. However, this should not interfere with normal functions, such as chewing or drinking. The results are immediate and include a more proportional gum line and attractive smile.
